Hollywood cocktails | South China Morning Post

When partying in Hollywood, it's as much about what you drink as where you go. After all, ordering a Cosmopolitan these days is so passe, while the re-emergence of the champagne cocktail is great for bar-hoppers wanting to rekindle that old Hollywood glamour. Celebrities such as Lindsay Lohan and Jessica Simpson enjoy chugging down their favourite drink - energy beverage Red Bull with a splash of vodka. Order one of those and you'll be ready to party until dawn. Here are some of the hottest cocktails to order when doing the Hollywood scene.

Key Lime Martini A special at the Spider Club (1735 Vine Street, tel: 323 462 8270), a hangout for the likes of the Hilton sisters and actor Donovan Leitch, this ultra-fruity Martini is being copied at numerous other bars across Hollywood. It is easy to make: Stoli Vanil, a splash of Rose's lime cordial and some butterscotch schnapps; throw in some pineapple juice and freshly squeezed lime and you're ready to guzzle.

Mandarin Martini Martinis, shaken or stirred, will never go out of style in these parts. Mix some Absolut Mandarin vodka, a splash of triple sec and Rose's lime cordial, a dash of sour and some cranberry juice and top it off with freshly squeezed lime.

Perm On certain nights of the week, you can take advantage of a US$10 manicure-and-Martini special at the Beauty Bar (above right; 1638 North Cahuenga Boulevard, tel: 323 464 7676). The most popular cocktail is the Perm, which, unlike perming your hair, you can try

at home. The recipe calls for Stoli Vanil mixed with orange, pineapple and cranberry juice. The drink

recalls the fruitiness of the Cosmopolitan, but without the retro connotations.

Hollywood Sunset It's mules and Martinis all the way at Star Shoes (6364 Hollywood Boulevard, tel: 323 462 7827), which concocts this refreshing, if rather potent, cocktail. Mix Vox vodka, a dash of Midori and cranberry and lime juice for a wonderful taste of summer.

The One Inch Punch (below right) is a big hit at bars around Los Angeles, and is especially sought after at retro Japanese lounge Tokio (1640 Cahuenga Boulevard, tel: 323 464 2065). All it needs is some Bacardi, a splash of exotic plum wine, some Chambord and lashings of pineapple and orange juice.

The Punk, the Thrill and the Tart Nowadays, trendsetters craving a heady mixture of vodka and berries are turning to the hot new formulation from Absolut. Its pink-tinged Raspberri vodka can be used in many different permutations. Among the most popular are the Punk (vodka, cranberry and pineapple juice); the Thrill, which adds fizzy soda and orange slices to the Raspberri vodka; and the Tart, for which imbibers will need some white cranberry juice, a splash of Cointreau and fresh lime. Don't forget to appoint a designated driver.
